Conviction of former IGP
The conviction of former IGP in the killing of Naxalite leader Varghese, after forty years of the incident, goes to prove that criminal jurisprudence is still effective in this country despite some flaws. Mr Varghese was shot and killed at point blank under the orders of the then SP and the DySP. The settled principles in law is that nobody should be allowed to take law into his own hands and nobody should be punished without giving him/her a reasonable opportunity to defend himself. In the instant case jungle law was imposed on a youth who was waging a political struggle, of course in a deviant way. That is no justification for the officers vested with the authority to maintain law and order to decide punishment on their own and execute it. The fact that Varghese was caught alive and was unarmed raises the gravity of the offence. This shows that the culprit was biased and had criminal intention to take the life of a citizen. Hence deserved the maximum punishment that law enjoins.

Live-in relationships
The Surpeme Court's comment and the objections raised by Solicitor General Indira Jaisingh on the live-in relationships will pave the way for a new discussion on the relationship between man and woman in the country. It is baffling to note that even the 'highly learned" Judges are illiterate when it comes to treating woman with dignity. Otherwise how an epithet like "Keep" find its place in a judgement. This is born out of a feudal mindset which is still prevalent among the men of all strata. We have synonyms like housewife , prostitutes etc to refer woman both in good and bad context but nothing like these to refer to men of household or loose virtue. The belief that woman is man's, second possession only after animals, seems to influence certain sections even at this IT age. Therefore we need re-defining of the society which is inclusive of women. All the right thinking men and women should come forward to offer their might so that such retrograde judgements shouldn't emerge in a civilised soceity.

Nobel Prize and politics
Maria Vargas LIosa won this year's Nobel Prize for Literrature. He is a original writer of fanatsy and realism. Yet this honour eluded him for all these years for "wrong" reason. As the genius in LIosa identified the reason distanced himself from social causes and became a votary of imperialism. He ia now being rewarded for this volte face.Long live Alfred Nobel and Down with the Nobel Committee.
